| Historical Background | Built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, the World's Fair Opera House had been constructed within the shell of Seattle's old Civic Auditorium; it quickly became the 3,100-seat pride of the town's arts establishment, with Igor Stravinsky himself giving a final nod of approval to the room's acoustics and overall decor. On the evening of May 24, 1962, the Opera House was formally dedicated with a performance by the esteemed maestro, Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985) and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. Among the programs booked at the Opera House during the fair were appearances by London's famous Old Vic Company (doing Shakespeare), England's D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, the San Francisco Ballet, the New York City Center Ballet (with choreographer George Balanchine), and Milton Katims (1909-2006) and the Seattle Symphony's presentation of Verdi's "Aida" with choreography by Seattle great, Robert Joffrey (1930-1988). |
