| Historical Background | Pier 69 was built by the Roslyn Coal and Coke Company in 1900. Pier 69 originally was known as Pier 13. The American Can Company built a warehouse across the street in 1916, and eventually purchased Pier 69. In 1931 the American Can Co. finished construction on a new building, using it to store tin for their canning operation. Pier 69 is the only concrete pier on the waterfront. The Port of Seattle acquired Pier 69 in 1988, after planning a master re-development of the central waterfront. In 1993, the Port's headquarters were moved from from Pier 66 to the newly renovated Pier 69 building. The building also houses the Victoria Clipper dock. |
