| Historical Background | "The Prom You Never Went To" first held in 1983, quickly became an institution in Seattle's gay and lesbian community. Each year, for one night, the Mountaineers Club in Lower Queen Anne became Lavender Valley High School, Home of the Fighting Poodles. The rooms and hallways were turned into detention halls, auditoriums, and teachers' lounges. And each year, revelers danced, looked fabulous, and had much more fun than anyone ever had at their real high-school prom. Dwindling attendance and steadily increasing expense combined to make 1997 the last year for the prom. (Source: The Seattle Times, April 28, 1997). |
