| Historical Background | The United Service Organizations, Inc. (USO) is a private, nonprofit organization that provides recreational services to members of the U.S. military, with programs in over 160 locations in 11 countries around the world. The organization was founded in 1941 in response to a request from President Franklin D. Roosevelt to boost the morale of uniformed U.S. military personnel through popular entertainment and a wide variety of recreational programs and services. Since 1941, the USO has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense, and has provided support and entertainment to U.S. armed forces both at home and abroad, relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from DOD. |
