Historical BackgroundWilli Unsoeld, legendary mountaineer and Professor of Philosophy at Olympia's Evergreen State College, was one of the first Americans to climb Mt. Everest. His daughter, Nandi, also an avid mountaineer, lost her life in 1976 while climbing on the Himalayan peak she was named after. Her father perished in an avalanche during a 1979 Evergreen State College expedition on Mt. Rainier.
