TitleExterior of the Joe Desimone Bridge after a 1974 fire, taken at the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington, January 23, 1976
PhotographerWallen, Don
Date1976
Historical BackgroundThis bridge was erected in honor of Giuseppe "Joe" Desimone (1881-1946), a Neapolitan immigrant who had quietly amassed a fortune farming in Seattle's South Park area and selling his produce at the Market. Barely literate, Desimone was nevertheless a savvy businessman and ingratiating politician who put his faith in real property, not stocks or speculation. Desimone began acquiring property at Pike Place and by 1941, owned the Pike Market Company. In his will, he prohibited his heirs from ever selling the property.
