ContentThis century surpassed all others for the beautiful writing found in its MSS. The Carolingian bookhand here represented, is well nigh perfect. One scribe of the period groans, "Scribere qui nescit, nullum putat esse laborem." (Whoso knows not how to write, thinks it is no trouble.") It has been noted, however, that the more beautiful a manuscript becomes in its characters, the less accurate is its Latinity. Some writings of the Benedictines during this century, are almost unintelligible because of their barbarous Latin.
