BindingContemporary black papier-mache binding. This was a Victorian Gothic style imitating medieval book covers carved in wood or ivory. The process was invented by Jackson and Son, London, presumably in the 1840s. Designed from a mould into which a mixture of plaster was poured on a papier mache base, the usual quantity for this type of binding was 1000. The binding was strengthed by metal armature and the papier mache spine was hinged on leather. Originally they were sold in plain colored paper cartons.
Gilt edges gauffered with a design of circles and diagonal lines.
