| General Notes | This is a plate from the work entitled "Sämtliche Giftgewächse Deutschlands...". It illustrates the plant "helleborus viridis" (Grübe Buefsvyrz -- green hellebore) with its German and Latin names beneath.
In the second and third editions of this book the lithographs were replaced with engravings. Conflicting information in the literature indicates this may have been published in 1831 rather than 1832. Additionally, the bibliographic elements come from "Herbals of five centuries: A contribution to medical history and bibliography" by Claus Nissen, the book that accompanies the modern collection of which this leaf is a part.
This is leaf number 48 from the modern work entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958. |
