General NotesThis is plate number 136 from the work "Icones plantarum...". It illustrates the plant "lathrea squamaria" (toothwort).

Georg Christian Oeder was a student of Albrecht von Haller, a professor of medicine, anatomy, surgery, and botony at the University of Göttingen. Von Haller is notable for his 8 volume work "Elementa Physiologiae Corporis Humani" ("Physiological Elements of the Human Body"). Oeder's work was commissioned by the Danish minister Johann Hartwig von Bernstorff in 1752. The work came to an early end when Oeder was called to Oldenburg in 1772. Only 600 plates were produced. Subsequent editions totalled 3240 by 1883.

Publication data in this record comes from Claus Nissen's work "Herbals of Five Centuries; A Contribution to Medical History and Bibliography".

This is leaf number 42 from the modern work entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958
