| General Notes | This is a plate from the work entitled "Rariorum plantarum historia" by Carolus Clusius. It illustrates two forms of "vicia", a genus encompasing roughly 140 plants, and commonly referred to as vetch.
Carolus Clusius was known to work closely with Rembert Dodoens and Matthias L'Obel, the three sharing correspondence, information, a publisher, and many illustrations. Roughly 60% of this work is thought to have appeared in print previously, either in Clusius' own work or that of Dodoens. The son of Virgil Solis of Frankfurt am Main contributed some of the new illustrations. Clusius, also known as Charles de l'Escluse, was also the translator into French of Dodoens Cruydeboeck.
This is leaf number 34 of the modern work entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves taken from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.]. 1958 |
