| General Notes | This is plate number 105 from "Purgantium aliarumque eo facientium..." by Rembert Dodoens. It illustrates the plant "asperula Flore Albo" (swallow-wort).
"Purgantium aliarumque..." is part of Dodoens' ongoing writings that started with the Flemish Cruÿdeboeck of 1554 and worked gradually and through various publications to "Stirpium historiae in pemptades sex", issued in 1583. Dodoens shared correspondence, notes, a publisher, and many illustrations with Carolus Clusius and Matthias L'Obel, with L'Obel publishing the Plantarum seu Stirpium icones, a compilation of all woodcuts used by the trio, in 1581.
This is leaf number 32 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.]. 1958 |
