General NotesThis is a plate from "Herbarz: ginak Bylinar..." by Pier Andrea Mattioli. It illustrates the plant "pseudoapios".

This is a translation in Czech of Mattioli's commentary on the work of Dioskorides. It was originally published in Italian by Nicolo de bascarini in Venice in 1554. The first edition featured no illustrations. By 1555 a new edition had emerged using small woodcuts to illustrate the various plants. Larger Italian copies were printed in 1570, 1581, and 1604.

The Czech translation came after Mattioli relocated to Prague in 1555 to serve as the personal physician of the Archduke Maximilian. It featured larger woodcuts that the earlier Italian editions.
Mattioli is notable for his tendency to vehemently oppose anyone who disagreed with him. He disgraced a number of physicians using his considerable political influence and in his books "Apologia adversus Amathum Lusitanum" and "Censura" he listed 121 plants he would fight over if someone had the audacity to contradict his identifications.

This is leaf number 27 taken from the morern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
