This is a leaf taken from the work entitled "Kreuter Buch..." by Hieronymus Bock published in 1551 by Wendel Rihel. It illustrates "Melonen" (melons).

Bock's work to many represents the basis for modern botany. His descriptions of the plants were written to allow for identification without an accompanying picture, and indeed the first edition of this work published in 1539 was completely lacking in images. The second edition was published in 1546 and illustrated by David Kandel, with this third edition following in 1551. The organization of this work represents a departure from previous herbals. Plants are divided into herbs, shrubs, and trees, then grouped based on appearance, qualities or other similarities. This is thought by some to have paved the way to the modern use of genus and species (Anderson, Frank. An Illustrated History of the Herbals. New York: Columbia University Press, 1977. ).

This is leaf number 21 from the modern work entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
