General NotesHand-colored woodcut.

This is a leaf from the work entitled "New Kreüterbuch..." published in Basel in 1543. It is the translated second edition of the work "De historia stirpium" published in 1542 by the same printer. The illustration is labeled "Stichastraut".

"De historia stirpium" and "New Kreüterbuch" are known for their illustrators' attention to nature. The author, Leonhart Fuchs, is thought to have closely supervised the creation of the 518 woodcuts present in this work. The book includes the first illustration of corn in Europe. Coloring of the plates closely matches the text's descriptions, indicating it was colored before being sold. It also includes "more than a hundred plants never before mentioned" (Anderson, Frank. An Illustrated History of the Herbals. New York: Columbia University Press, 1977.)

This is leaf number 19 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves taken from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
