This is page number 136 from the work entitled "Contrafayt Kreüterbüch...". It illustrates the plant "Chamillen" (chamomile).

"Contrafayt Kreüterbuch..." is a German translation of the 1530 work "Herbarum vivae eicones", from which followed two additional volumes, one in 1531 and one posthumously in 1537. The illustrator, Hans von Weiditz, was an accomplished artist in his time, with his work at times mistaken for that of Dürer or Burgkmair. His illustrations are technically very accurate and even include damage done to the specimens rather than creating an idealized version of the plant. Some of his original watercolors were discovered in the early 1930s and show an even greater appreciation of nature and botany considered somewhat ahead of his time. This German edition of the "Herbarum..." sees the addition of a number of un-illustrated German plants and 50 additional illustrations not in the original latin work.

This is leaf number 15 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
