| General Notes | This is a leaf from "Das Distilierbuoch" printed in 1521 by Johann Grüninger. It illustrates "Schelwurtz" (celedine).
This is example comes from one edition of at least seven published by Grüninger. They were often abridged and combined with works by other authors. This edition was printed along with the work "Das buoch des lebens" by Marsilius Ficinus. The book covers distillery equipment, medicinal plans, and the treatment of disease. "The plant illustrations are the same as in Prüss' editions of the Latin Ortus" (Nissen, Claus, Herbals of Five Centuries: A Contribution to Medical History and Bibliography, L'Art Ancien, Zurich, 1958).
