This is plate no. 84 taken from the Icipit Tractatus de uirtutibus herbarum, also known as Tractatus de virtutibus herbarum; De virtutibus herbarum; and simply Herbarius, published 1491 by Leonardus Achates. It illustrates an image of the plant "Mellissa" (lemon balm).
This edition is based upon the Herbarius Maguntie impressus, the first herbal from Mainz, Germany, printed in 1484 by Fust-Schoffer. The Incipit Tractatus includes woodcuts of 150 various medicinal herbs. The primary differences between this edition and the original are the omission of the German names of plants and the transposition of plates numbers 113 and 119. The title is also preceeded by an image of two scholars and the text ARNOLDI DE NOVA VILLA: AVICENNA, a reference to the sources used in the preface.
This is leaf number 2 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
