Plate No. 368 taken from the work entitled "Phytanthoza Iconographia...". It illustrates the plant "Chondrila" with its various parts labeled in Latin.

Phytanthoza Iconographia has a high aesthetic value for the appearance and quality of its color prints. In addition, it was more scientifically reliable than previous herbals. The author, Regensburg pharmacist, Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683-1741), was a major figure in his field, gaining an important reputation as a leader among botanists from his writings on various plants and herbs. "Phytanthoza iconographia..." was a four-volume book he created as a compilation of previous articles and included a variety of economic, garden and medicinal plants. This work is often seen as the first major botanical work to use color engraved prints. The color-plates of plants in this work were designed by artists Bartholomew Seuter, Johann Elias Ridinger (1698-1767), and Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767), some of the best engravers of the day. The plates were printed with a process that Seuter invented. The accompanying descriptions were written by Johann Georg Nicolaus Dieterichs (1681-1737) plates 1-73, Ludwig Michael Dieterichs (1716-1769) plates 76-525, and Ambrosius Karl Bieler (1693-1747). In 1730, Georg Dionys Ehret (1708-1770) added additional drawings. Boerhaave and Johann Burmann created an index for this work.

This is leaf no. 40 taken from the modern collection entitled: Herbals of five centuries; 50 original leaves from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss herbals; with an introduction and bibliography by Claus Nissen. Zurich: L'Art Ancien, Olten, Weiss-Hesse [etc.], 1958.
