| Content | 'Ralegh had intended to compose a three-volume encyclopedia from the Creation to his present day, but completed only the first part which comprised five books and 776 folio pages, stopping abruptly in 168BC with an account of the wars between Macedon and early Rome. Tracing the rise and fall of the empires of Babylon, Persia and Greece, Ralegh anchors his narrative firmly in the Old Testament, but traverses widely across Greek and Roman philosophy and poetry, rabbinical exegesis, Christian writings in Latin and Greek, and medieval and Renaissance theology.' All issues from 1614 -1634 bore a 1614 imprint on an allegorical engraved frontispiece. They were all struck from the same plate, retouched in later ones.
