| Binding | This is a fragile binding that should be handled as little as possible.
Bound in original leather covers over pressboard. Poorly rebacked in 20th century with corner reinforcements.
Tooled in blind with handle tools and rolls.
Spine author/title label tooled in gold with handle letters appears to be late 17th century.
Sewn on 6 cords which have disintegrated. Sewing cracked in center of textblock, breaking textblock into 2 sections. Textblock and binding separated.
Original headbands missing.
All edges trimmed, seemingly contemporary with textblock. |

| Content | 'Ralegh had intended to compose a three-volume encyclopedia from the Creation to his present day, but completed only the first part which comprised five books and 776 folio pages, stopping abruptly in mid-100's BC with an account of the wars between Macedon and early Rome. Tracing the rise and fall of the empires of Babylon, Persia and Greece, Ralegh anchors his narrative firmly in the Old Testament, but traverses widely across Greek and Roman philosophy and poetry, rabbinical exegesis, Christian writings in Latin and Greek, and medieval and Renaissance theology.' All issues from 1614 -1634 bore a 1614 imprint on an allegorical engraved frontispiece. They were all struck from the same plate, retouched in later ones.
