| Content | William Camden's Britannia was first published in Latin in 1586. If not the first English historian, topographer, and antiquarian, he was the first to relate the three studies. It was the revolutionary subject matter and its treatment that made it both the tool and the model for research in all three subjects for the next 250 years. Camden published several editions, each with revisions during his lifetime, the last being in 1607, including additional plates and maps. Originally in Latin, the first edition translated into English was published in 1610.
The main object of Camden's Britannia was to provide an appreciation of the land and ancient monuments of the Britons. The book also provides a survey of the regions, places, and features of Britain, county by county. Camden describes the natural environments and landscapes, the towns, cities, and countrysides, agriculture, industries, and more. |
