Ice Bridge and Mounds, Niagara Falls The grandeur and loveliness of the Niagara Falls is replaced in winter by a not less majestic but more forbidding aspect. The mighty sweep of the waters does not allow of any formation of ice in the rapids above or below the falls, but at the edges of the river, in the shallows, mighty columns and pillars of crystal are piled up in the shape of huge mounds, on which the snows of heaven descend to add their pure white to the glistening green of the rushing waters, the deep purple of the ice behind the flowing cutain and the brilliant hues of the giant icicles reflecting the rays of the sun. And however long a visitor may linger, new beauties will present themselves, and the greater will be his appreciation with every moment.
