| Clip Title | William Lagen at Port Hobron and whale flensing, Kodiak Island, Alaska, ca. 1934 |
| Clip Summary | A whale sits in a harbor yard with workers on and around it. Young William Lagen walks in front of the whale and shakes hands with one of the men, both of them looking toward the camera as the workers sharpen their blades and begin the flensing process. Blubber on one side of the whale carcass is peeled off and then cut into smaller pieces. The carcass is turned over so the blubber on the other side can be removed. Lagen is seen onboard a ship. He smiles and points to the water where a whale carcass is floating. On the shore, Lagen wears an explorer's hat, holding up a movie camera. A man in a suit appears to inspect a whale carcass while workers cut into the whale with long blades attached to sticks. The family dog, Bolo, is briefly seen nearby. |
