| Notes | Title of clip supplied by cataloger. The following information was provided by respondents to requests for information from UW Week "Lost & Found Films" series, 2009-10. Alyn Duxbury, emeritus professor of oceanography, wrote in with the following information: The short film showing the octopus is taken at the Friday Harbor Labs, San Juan Island probably in the mid 40's to 1950. It shows the finding of an octopus hidden in a crevice under a ledge in the rocky intertidal zone. The rather frantic actions of the octopus and its leaving of its den voluntarily leads me to believe that the hunters have place some copper sulphate in the water of the den. The copper ions in the sea water interfere with the octopus's ability to extract oxygen. Thus the panic and attempt to escape. My suspicions are strengthened by the fact one scene shows a plastic container sitting on the rocks that contains some blue material. This was not a very considerate way of collecting. Later it shows the octopus being placed into one of the old aquariums used in the Friday Harbor labs to house specimens for research or display. Dr Arthur Martin of U of W, Zoology Dept. was the principal faculty member studying octopi during this time. Octopi were collected and brought to this campus where they were housed on the third floor zoology labs of the Old Ocean Building that had a circulating sea water system. |
