The following information was provided by respondents to requests for information from UW Week "Lost & Found Films" series, 2009-10. Film of Ivy Planting Ceremony at David Thomson Hall ca. 1952 David Thomson (1871-October 28, 1953) was University President after Henry Suzzallo's departure for 1926-27 and held various offices thereafter until his retirement. Photographs of Dr. Thomson on the UW Library Special Collections and MOHAI websites clearly identify him as the distinguished gentleman in the convertible with the two ladies. A photograph of the same shovel as filmed is also on the UW Library Special Collections website "Spade used for ivy planting ceremony, University of Washington, November 20, 1952" photography by James O. Snedden of the UW Office of Public Information (negative UW20199z). In that Thomson hall was built in 1948, Dr. Thomson died October 1953, and given the photograph of the shovel is dated November 20, 1952, I would suggest 1952 as the film's date. Snedden took many still and aerial photographs during this period and would be my guess for the cine film as well.
The other elder official with glasses in the ivy planting and later in the car does not appear to be President Henry Schmitz. The two ladies may be Thomson relatives (check his obituary for survivors), the darker younger man standing outside the car is too old to be a student, perhaps he was the alumnus and local car dealer who provided the convertible?. No ideas yet on the student helping with the ivy planting. I suggest looking in the Daily for month of November 1952 for more details of the ceremony. Information provided by Stephen Edwin Lundgren, Harborview Medical Center staff, MOHAI local historian, and UW alumnus
In the special collections of UW online we can read: The spade used to plant the sprig of ivy was first presented to the university by Roland Oliver on June 9, 1903 on behalf of the class of 1903. Howard A. Hanson gave the first Ivy Oration as part of this same ceremony. The spade became an important element of the Ivy Planting Ceremony, which was part of the graduation festivities of many classes until about 1955. The spade was engraved with years ranging from 1903 to 1952, although not all years during this span are represented. see: https://www.lib.washington.edu/specialcoll/findaids/docs/photosgraphics/UWAlumniReunionAlbumPHColl363.xml Information provided by Christophe Verlinde
