| Notes | Maslenitsa (Russian mardi gras, or Bliny week) is a pre-Christian Russian holiday marking the end of winter and the long-awaited arrival of spring. On the last day of Maslenitsa a stuffed effigy symbolizing winter is thrown into a bonfire, the eating and drinking end, and Orthodox Lent begins. |
