| Notes | The brothers Cyril and Methodius ( Cyril, 826- 869, and Methodius, 815-884) were Greek missionaries and linguists, known as the "Apostles to the Slavs." To translate the Bible into Slavonic vernacula, the brothers invented an alphabet based on Greek characters which is now used in modern Slavic languages from Macedonia and Serbia to Russia. The monument acknowledges Samara's sister-city relationship with, Stara-Zagora in Bulgaria, where Cyril and Methodius carried out some of their missionary activity. |
