NotesCommissioned by Catherine the Great, the monument to Peter the Great, the westernizer and the founder of St.Petersburg, was the creation of French sculptor Etienne Falconet in 1778. It was immortalized in Aleksander Pushkin's poem "The Bronze Horseman." The base of the monument is a single piece of solid granite, weighing some 1, 600 tons.
