| Description | The shinobue is an open, side-blown flute with seven fingerholes, similar to the takebue. This is one of a set of 12 numbered shinobue in graduated sizes and tunings - one for each note of the chromatic scale. It has red lacquer on the inside and is numbered on the top end with a Japanese character in red lacquer on top of black. The shinobue is one of the instruments in the ensemble which accompanies dance, dance-dramas and other theatrical forms associated with festivals of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. It is also found in the ensemble which accompanies Kabuki Hayashi, where it embroiders the shamisen line and creates a special atmosphere. It is also used in Kabuki Geza (off-stage) music. |
