DescriptionThis instrument is a long-necked plucked drone lute. It has a long, hollow wooden neck that is joined to a large gourd bowl. The point at which the neck is joined to the bowl is overlaid with a wooden floral design. The wooden sound table is slightly convex. There are 4 large wooden tuning pegs, 2 of which are set frontally and 2 of which are set laterally on either side of the neck. The metal strings pass through an ivory string holder, over an ivory nut, across a slightly convex ivory bridge, through large plastic tuning beads and are looped through a wooden tailpiece at the base of the instrument. Silk threads are wedged between the playing strings and the bridge (used to bring out the upper harmonics). The perimeter of the neck and the sound table is decorated with a light plastic and dark wood inlay. The sound table is decorated with long- plumed birds and a floral motif on either side of the bridge. The manufacturer's insignia appears on a decal at the upper end of the neck near the nut. It reads: Rikhi Ram, Musical Instrument Manufacturing Co., B-4 Marina Arcade, Connaught Circus, New Delhi (suppliers to A.I.R.).
Note: The lowest of the 4 strings is missing.
