| Description | Bamboo tube with a long section cut out of each side, leaving one long section on each side attached to the bottom of the tube. This slit division allows the halves to vibrate when struck against the heel of the hand. Instrument of the Kalinga people of the northern Philippines, especially by young girls in the evening for recreation and to drive away evil spirits. Often played in groups of up to six. A small hole (8 cm from the base) is closed or opened by the thumb or finger of the player allowing a variation in the sound of the buzz. There are two large cracks one on each side of this balingbing (25cm and 17 cm in length), and one crack rising up from the base (9 cm in length). |
