DescriptionThis is a large metal kettle drum with extensive leather lacings strapping down the skin head. It has two leather-laced handles on opposite sides of the rim. Body is made from patchwork-like riveted metal. Geographical and cultural origin are unknown; Cynthia Schmidt suggests it may be from the Muslim influenced Savannah belt region south of the Sahara desert (6/98). The skin on the head is light coloured with dark markings.
