DescriptionThe kotsuzumi (ko-tsuzumi) is a double-headed hourglass drum struck with the fingers. It has a hollowed hourglass-shaped wooden body, usually made of cherrywood. The surface of this drum is black lacquered with a gold floral design. The heads are made of horsehide stretched over iron rings and are larger in diameter than the body. The edges of the heads are coated with black lacquer. They are held on by a cord passing in a "W" shaped lacing through holes in each head around the rim. Another cord is tied around this, encircling the drum. The lacing is somewhat looser than that of the otsuzumi; the tightness of this lacing determines the pitch of the drum. The back of the skins is built up with clay so the body will fit snugly onto the center of the skins. The front head is slightly thicker than the rear one, and the player must adjust timbre by applying deerskin patches to the backs of the heads and tiny squares of paper to the surface of the rear head. When played, it is held by the lacing with the left hand over the right shoulder, and struck with the fingers of the right hand. The player moistens the rear head by breathing on it or by applying saliva with the fingers to adjust to environmental condition.
It is used in No, Nagauta, Geza and many local folk musics.
The drum is kept in a hard blue carrying case.
