DescriptionOne of a pair of stick rattles of West African origin (probably part of the Ghanaian collection acquired by the Ethnomusicology Division in 1979). It is made of a single piece of stained wood and consists of a (nearly) straight handle piece and a narrower piece which branches off at approximately a 45-degree. The narrower piece holds 13 gourd discs ranging from 2 1/4" (5.7 cm) to 3 3/8" (8.5 cm) in diameter and approximately 1/4" thick. Each disc has notched edges colored blue and incised (burned?) lines radiating out from the center hole on the top surfaces. The underside of each disc contains more of the blue coloring (paint or chalk?). The discs are kept on the stick by a knot of string tied to the lower end..
This rattle is the smaller of the pair: the handle length is 20 5/8" (52.5 cm), and the disc bearer length is approximately 14" (35.5 cm)
