| Description | Heterochord half-tube zither with six strings of yellow nylon. Body of light grain brown wood, with wood bridge attached to the narrower end, glued to the sound board, and a cloth covering on the wider end, with the strings attached to a decorative rope of intertwined yellow, green, and white string. The strings are tied around this wide end, through wood slots, and at the smaller end pass through the back by means of small knots in the string. It is tuned by means of six detachable, moveable bridges, and is plucked with a long, narrow hand-held plectrum. The bridges are stored in the closet of room 58. Of the 6 bridges, the ivory tips of three have come unglued. The wagon is used mostly in Shinto music: Mikagura, or Kugura-uta. It is also used in Kumeuta and Azuma-asobi. This wagon is wrapped in a red-orange cloth that is rapidly deteriorating. |
