| Description | Double-headed barrel drum on a small stand. Drum is spool-shaped: the skins are larger in diameter than the body. The skins are stretched over wide, flat rings. The tension is controlled by silken cords laced in the form of a W, with an encircling belt. The cords are attached through holes stitched down by leather strips at 8 places in each drum head. It is struck by 2 thin sticks (see ID #49). The body of the drum is painted with a gold background and many-colored paintings of dragons and trees. The stand is black-lacquered with carved legs. The kakko is part of the Gagaku court orchestra. The kakko player leads the ensemble. With the shoko (gong), it articulates the space between the main beats of the gakudaiko within the colotomic structure of the music. |
