KeywordHyangak; Court Music; Kagok; Sijo; Kasa; Drum; Hourglass Drum
DescriptionDouble-headed hour-glass drum. Hollow, hour-glass shaped wooden body, red with black and yellow designs. Two white skins are stretched over wide loops and stitched to conceal the loops. Skins are held at either end of the body by thick lacing woven in a zigzag fashion through metal hooks that hook onto both ends around the rims. The cords are then caught together in pairs at one end with a loose leather loop, forming a "Y" pattern. These leather loops can be moved up or down along the cords to increase or decrease the tension on the heads. The left side is covered with cowhide and struck with the left-hand palm; the right side is covered with horsehide and is struck with a slim bamboo stick.
Changgo is used in Korean court music - hyangak ensemble. Also accompanies kagok (a kind of song cycle) in an ensemble. Accompanies sijo (lyric song style) alone with singer or with a small ensemble. Accompanies kasa (a long narrative song) either alone with singer or with small ensemble. Used for secular music, in popular music and festivals.
This instrument has a repaired crack in the drum body. There is a duct-tape patch, 8 cm long, on the inside of the smaller head, repairing a small tear.
