DescriptionThis is a horizontal arched harp with nylon strings. The arch is made from the curved root of a shá tree (Acacia catechu) which is tapered down toward the terminal, which flares to resemble to leaf of a bow tree. The arch of this harp is made of two pieces which are joined 12cm from the end. The boat-shaped resonator is made from padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus) and is painted with black lacquer. The string holder is composed of a curved spine of padauk, around which is stretched deer skin that covers the resonator. The deer skin is covered with red pigment and has 3 soundholes. The instrument is decorated with gold scrolling along the borders and is inlaid with small (4mm) diameter pieces of mirrored glass. The 14 strings are bound to the arch with tasseled tuning chords twisted from red cotton. This instrument rests on an x-frame hardwood stand with red linen (?) padding.
