Vintage 18th c. marbled paper, Spot Combed pattern
Vintage 18th c. marbled paper, Spot Combed pattern
TitleVintage 18th c. marbled paper, Spot Combed pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date18th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe: Spot combed pattern.

This pattern is similar to and could be mistaken for a Zebra and/or Antique Straight pattern as well as a Freestyle Stone marble (Maurer-Mathison pg 73). In a Zebra and/or Antique Straight pattern after the colors are dropped, the entire bath is combed, then a color or two might be dropped on top of this comb. In a Freestyle Stone, after the colors are dropped a stylus would be drawn through the bath randomly, leaving in its wake a single lined path surrounded by untouched Turkish pattern areas.

This pattern is created by first making a Turkish pattern. A comb with closely set teeth would then be drawn through the bath randomly, leaving in its wake fine lined paths surrounded by areas of untouched Turkish pattern.

The primary colors for this example are blue, green, red and yellow.

Collection NotesThe flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century.
