Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Double comb waved pattern
Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Double comb waved pattern
TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, Double comb waved pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe: Double comb waved
Miura: Wave (Miura distinguishes whether it is a Small or a Large Wave marble)

According to Muira this pattern was created in the middle of the 19th century.

This pattern is similar in final appearance to Miura's Serpentine marble. Wolf suggests that any base pattern with the same final undulating step be called ‘waved' however Miura suggests that the base pattern should be a Nonpareil.

This pattern is created by first making a standard Nonpareil pattern. Once this is done, a final comb with one set of teeth set in wider intervals than was used in the Nonpareil is drawn once more through the bath in a wavy line. For Muira's distinction, the width of the teeth intervals used in the final step would determine whether he called it Small or Large Wave.

The primary colors for this example are red, yellow, light and medium blue and white.

Collection NotesThe flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century.
