| Title | Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Mixed pattern |
| Artist | Unknown |
| Date | 19th century |
| Descriptive Notes | According to Wolfe there is no name for this as it is a combination of several patterns. It would be an Antiqued (Spotted) Combed pattern with Snail marble. Muira has no examples which match this example either. The pattern would be created with a drawn comb base then a stylus would have been used to created the Curl or Snail element, then the last thing to be thrown down would have been (according to Muira) soap spirits which causes the small white spots to appear.
The primary colors in this example are red, blue, yellow and a medium green. |
| Collection Notes | The flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century. |
