Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Spanish on Turkish pattern
Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Spanish on Turkish pattern
TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, Spanish on Turkish pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe and Miura: Spanish on Turkish pattern.

This pattern is a variation of a (typical) Turkish where the addition of the Spanish effect alters the overall look of the Turkish element.

The pattern is created by first making a Turkish pattern. As the paper is laid onto the bath to pull up the pattern, it is agitated back and forth in the manner used for any Spanish pattern, causing the characteristic gradated lines to appear.

The primary colors for this example are light brown, brown, blue, and pink.

Collection NotesThis sample is scanned from a book cover.
The text block is dated 1651 but the book appears to have been rebound probably in the late 19th century.
