Vintage 18th c. marbled paper, Spanish on Turkish with Shell veins pattern
TitleVintage 18th c. marbled paper, Spanish on Turkish with Shell veins pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date18th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe and Miura: Spanish on Turkish with Shell veins pattern.

The pattern is created by first making a Shell pattern. Then in the typical Turkish pattern manner, one or more colors is dropped onto the bath, causing the Shell pattern to constrict, isolating it into veins. As the paper is laid onto the bath to pull up the pattern, it is agitated back and forth in the manner used for any Spanish pattern, causing the characteristic gradated lines to appear.

The primary colors for this example are black and brown.
