| Title | Vintage 18th c. marbled paper, Romantic on Shell pattern |
| Artist | Unknown |
| Date | 1797 |
| Descriptive Notes | Wolfe: Romantic (sometimes he refers to it as Broken) on Shell pattern Miura: Gravel on Shell marble.
This pattern is created by first completing a Shell base. Then the Romantic aspect would be accomplished by dropping ink onto the bath which have followed the required two step process of mixing caustic elements to marbling inks for this pattern. These last Romantic spots would likely have needed careful monitoring in order to keep the characteristic 'breaking up' of the inks limited to those areas.
The primary colors for this example are black, brown and red.
