Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, French curl on Turkish pattern
TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, French curl on Turkish pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe: French Curl on Turkish
Miura: Snail on Turkish

Although Wolfe suggests that this pattern's creation dates back to at least as early as 1630, Miura traces its beginnings to a later decade, 1660 in France.

This pattern is created by starting with any pattern as a base, in this case Turkish. Once the desired base pattern is completed either an individual stylus or a comb with one set of teeth set in very wide intervals would be inserted into the bath and swirled.

The primary colors for this example are red, blue, yellow ochre, green, and white.

Collection NotesThis sample is taken from a book cover.

The book also has endsheets which are French curl but do not match the covers.

Though the text block is dated 1751 the binding is later probably from the mid 19th century.

There is a binder's tag on the front paste down. 'G.Hedber Bokbindare Stockholm Drottnincgatan 51.'
