Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Italian with Spanish pattern
Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, Italian with Spanish pattern
TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, Italian with Spanish pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe and Miura: Spanish on Italian pattern.

This pattern is a variation of an (typical) Italian where the addition of the Spanish effect alters the overall look of the Italian element.

The pattern is created by first making an Italian pattern. As the paper is laid onto the bath to pull up the pattern, it is agitated back and forth in the manner used for any Spanish pattern, causing the characteristic gradated lines to appear.

The primary colors for this example are black, yellow and red.

Collection NotesThe flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century.
