Date20th century
Descriptive NotesAlthough Wolfe does not address this pattern as a whole, only in pieces (Wide comb and waved), Miura does and calls it a Serpentine marble.

This Serpentine, according to Miura, was first created in the middle of the 19th century.

The pattern is created by starting with a Turkish base. A comb with one set of teeth is drawn through the bath twice vertically, once in either direction with the second pass halving the first. This step is repeated horizontally. Then a comb, with one set of teeth set at wide intervals, is drawn through the bath once vertically making a plain Wide comb (Arch) pattern. In this variation, after the last pass completes a non-wavy Wide comb, a final comb with one set of teeth set at slightly wider intervals is drawn through the bath once vertically in exaggerated wavy lines.

The primary colors for this sample are red, green, white and blue.

Collection NotesThis example is scanned from a book cover and has matching endsheets.

Though the text block for this book is dated 1824, the Serpentine pattern (according to Miura) did not make its appearance for another twenty or thirty years. This coupled with the possibility that this is a Cockerell & Sons marbled paper, makes it likely that this book was bound or rebound much later than its publication date, sometime in the early 20th century.
