Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, French curl on Turkish pattern
Vintage 19th c. marbled paper, French curl on Turkish pattern
TitleVintage 19th c. marbled paper, French curl on Turkish pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesWolfe: French Curl on Turkish
Miura: Snail on Turkish

Although Wolfe suggests that this pattern's creation dates back to at least as early as 1630, Miura traces its beginnings to a later decade, 1660 in France.

This pattern is created by starting with any pattern as a base, in this case Turkish (where the last 'color' thrown is actually some sort of dispersant, revealing the paper underneath). Once the desired base pattern is completed either an individual stylus or a comb with one set of teeth set in very wide intervals would be inserted into the bath and swirled.

The primary colors for this example are red, blue, green and yellow.

Collection NotesThe flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century.
