Vintage 19th C. marbled paper, Spanish with Shell vein pattern
TitleVintage 19th C. marbled paper, Spanish with Shell vein pattern
ArtistUnknown
Date19th century
Descriptive NotesAccording to Wolfe this is an example of a Spanish with Shell vein pattern. Miura does not address this as an individual pattern but rather shows examples of each of these types separately.

This pattern is created by starting first with a Shell base, meaning that the ink thrown would be mixed with oil. The oil causes the spots to appear lighter around the edges and getting darker towards their centers. Then to created the typical Spanish pattern, another color would be thrown onto the Shell in larger drops (in this case dark red ink was thrown), this color would not have oil in it. With this addition of larger color drops, it would cause the Shell to constrict into veins. Lastly, as the paper is laid upon the bath to be pulled, it would be agitated back and forth causing the linear gradations to appear.

Collection NotesThe flat sample from which this photo was scanned is a salvaged endsheet. There is no record of the original item from which these endsheets were taken. Information regarding creation dates has therefore been estimated (using Wolfe), typically by century.
